Privacy policy
What we collect, why we hold it, and what you can ask us to do with it
Last updated 9 August 2026.
American Shipping International LLC ("ASI", "we", "us") operates asishipping.com and the client portal at portal.asishipping.com. This policy explains what personal information we handle when you use this site, send us an enquiry or a quote request, or ship with us.
If anything here is unclear, ask us before you send us information. Our contact details are at the foot of this page.
What we collect
Four categories, and nothing we do not need
Information you give us directly. Your name, company, email address, telephone number, and the details of the shipment you are asking about: the vehicle or cargo, its VIN or serial number, its condition, the origin and the destination. If you ask for a quote or make a booking, we also collect the ownership and identity documents the export process requires, which can include the vehicle title, a bill of sale, a lien release, and identification.
Information created by shipping with you. Booking references, bills of lading, terminal receipts, invoices, payment records and correspondence.
Client portal information. If you hold a portal account, your login credentials and the record of what you did in the portal.
Technical information. Our hosting and security infrastructure records IP address, browser and device type, pages requested and timestamps. This is ordinary web server logging and we use it to keep the site available and secure.
We do not ask for, and do not want, payment card numbers by email or through a web form.
Why we hold it
To quote, to ship, and to satisfy the authorities that regulate the movement
We use personal information to:
- answer your enquiry and prepare a quotation
- arrange, book and carry out the shipment, including collection, loading and delivery
- prepare and file the export documentation, including the electronic export filing
- meet our obligations as a licensed Ocean Transportation Intermediary and to respond to lawful requests from customs, standards and enforcement authorities at origin and destination
- invoice you and keep the accounting records we are required to keep
- keep the site and the portal secure and working
- send you operational updates about a shipment in progress
Where the law requires a stated legal basis, we rely on the performance of a contract with you, our compliance with a legal obligation, and our legitimate interest in operating and securing the business. Where we rely on consent, such as optional analytics, you can withdraw it at any time.
We do not use your information for automated decision-making that produces a legal or similarly significant effect.
Who else sees it
A shipment cannot move without your details reaching other parties
This is the part worth reading closely, because it is unavoidable in freight rather than optional. To move your cargo we pass the information the movement requires to:
- Ocean carriers and their agents, to book space and issue the bill of lading
- Terminals and port facilities, to deliver the unit and satisfy the gate
- Trucking and inland carriers, to collect and deliver
- Our agents and correspondents at the destination, to receive the cargo and clear it
- Customs, standards and border authorities at origin and destination, where they require it
- Auctions and dealerships, where we are collecting a unit you bought
- Professional advisers, insurers and banks, where relevant to the shipment or a claim
- Service providers who host, secure and support our systems, under contract and only for that purpose
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
We may disclose information where the law compels us to, and to establish or defend a legal claim.
Where it goes
International transfer is inherent to what we do
We are based in the United States and our customers ship to other countries, most often in West Africa. Your information will therefore be transferred to, and processed in, countries outside the one you live in, including countries whose data protection laws differ from your own and which may not have been assessed as offering an equivalent standard of protection.
Where we transfer personal information from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we do so on the basis of appropriate safeguards, including standard contractual clauses, or because the transfer is necessary to perform our contract with you.
If you would like details of the safeguards applying to a particular transfer, ask us.
How long
As long as the shipment, the law and any dispute require
We keep enquiry and quotation records for a limited period so we can pick up a conversation you started. We keep shipment, documentation, invoicing and accounting records for the longer of: the period required by United States federal and New Jersey state law, including the record retention obligations that apply to a licensed Ocean Transportation Intermediary and to export filings; the period required to resolve a dispute or claim; and the period required to satisfy our tax and audit obligations.
When a record is no longer needed for any of those purposes, we delete it or render it anonymous.
Security
What we do, stated without overclaiming
We apply administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including transport encryption on this site and the portal, access controls, and limiting access to staff who need it for their work.
No method of transmitting or storing information is completely secure, and we do not claim otherwise. If a breach affects your personal information and the law requires us to tell you, we will.
Your rights
What you can ask us to do
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- know and access the personal information we hold about you, and how we use and disclose it
- correct information that is inaccurate
- delete information, subject to the records we are legally required to keep
- receive a portable copy of information you provided to us
- object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent where we relied on it
- opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. As stated above, we do not sell or share it, so there is nothing to opt out of
- not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights. We will not refuse you service, charge you a different price or give you a lesser standard of service for making a request
California residents have these rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, and may use an authorised agent to make a request.
Residents of the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom have these rights under the applicable data protection regulation, and may also lodge a complaint with their national supervisory authority.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. We will verify your identity before acting, because acting on an unverified request is itself a privacy failure. We respond within the period the applicable law allows.
Cookies
What runs on this site
This site uses cookies and similar technologies that are strictly necessary for it to work and stay secure.
We also use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and where visitors have difficulty. It sets cookies and sends usage data to Google, which acts as our service provider. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not run advertising pixels.
Google Analytics does not load if your browser sends a Do Not Track signal. We check for that signal before any analytics script is requested, and we do not load it on non-production versions of the site. You can also refuse or delete cookies through your browser settings, though refusing strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site or the portal from working.
Children
This is not a service for children
This site and our services are directed at businesses and at adults arranging a shipment. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
How to reach us about any of this
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of the page. Where a change materially affects how we handle information you have already given us, we will take reasonable steps to tell you.
